Runway vs. Reality: Giant Knitted Scarves From Milan Fashion Week
Day 1 is in the bag, so onto Day 2 of Milano Moda Uomo—collections from Italian stallions Bottega Veneta, Salavtore Ferragamo, and Prada, as well as American abroad Calvin Klein, to name a few.
It's also time for the second installment of our Runway vs. Reality feature in which we dissect a particular trend from the catwalk and show how to apply it to your closet. (Yesterday's edition: Fur.)
So far in Milan we've seen graphic looks in minimalist black and white (thank you, Neil Barrett) and killer rocker attitude from shows like John Varvatos and Costume National. We've also seen a lot of chunky oversized scarves, a tricky accessory that could have you looking like a grungy dude hanging outside a 7-Eleven (or Lenny Kravitz) before you know it.
Today's trend: Giant knitted scarves
Salvatore Ferragamo is a model of doing it right. They debuted over a dozen giant scarves in solid bold colors and plaids, as well as different textures, like this gray fringe number (above right). But where they knocked it out of the park was by pairing it with subdued outerwear, in this case a bordeaux leather shearling jacket. That's the key takeaway: When it comes to oversized scarves you want to make sure the focus stays on the accessory (that is the point, after all) and that its loudness doesn't clash with the rest of your outfit. Don't do as Philipp Plein did and pair a crocodile leather jacket (above left) with a busy camo pattern. Less is more.
