Kim Gordon

what do Andy Warhol, Isabella Rossellini, Glenn O’Brien, and Kim Gordon have in common? Iceberg ad campaigns, for starters. It’s been 40 years since the brand was founded by the Gerani family, and they’re celebrating in a big way: Olivier Zahm and Gianni Oprandi lensed and directed an extensive ad campaign featuring 12 of today’s most influential people in art and culture. A first look at the project, titled “Downtown Gallery,” debuts exclusively in the slideshow above.

In the early ’80s, Iceberg tapped Oliviero Toscani to direct ads featuring the likes of Warhol, Vivienne Westwood, and Elio Fiorucci; come the mid-’90s, Steven Meisel continued the trend with Farrah Fawcett, Sofia Coppola, Iggy Pop, and Isabella Rossellini. This time around, it was musician Donald Cumming and his wife, actress Georgia Ford; journalist and writer Glenn O’Brien; Sonic Youth cofounder Kim Gordon; artist Olaf Breuning; actress Stella Schnabel; photographer Sandy Kim; artist Rita Ackermann; journalist Karley Sciortino; rapper Mykki Blanco; painter Jeanette Hayes; and Renaissance man Zahm himself. “We went straight to the source—downtown New York,” he said. “We decided to photograph some vintage iconic pieces from the ’70s together with the new Spring/Summer 2015 collection in order to tell the story of a 40-year history of the brand.”

In addition to the pared-back portraits, each subject was also filmed silent, mimicking Warhol’s famous Screen Tests—rain, a pencil scribbling on paper, and inexplicable machines are the only sounds in the background. All the videos will be available on Iceberg’s Instagram account beginning tomorrow.
